Last Sunday afternoon, I traveled up to stay with some friends who have a house on the edge of Lake Winona near Manchester, Indiana. We had a nice lunch on Labor Day and rode in their pontoon boat on the lake. It was a lovely, warm, sunny day, and I was dressed in shorts and a short-sleeved shirt. We went around the lake, looking at the various properties on the shoreline and talking about growing up there as Kay had done since she was a little girl. We saw the house of Homer Rodeheaver, who was Billy Sunday’s musical director and an early pioneer of sacred music recordings. His biggest-selling record was a recording of The Old Rugged Cross. We saw but didn’t visit, the museum home of Billy Sunday, the former Major League Baseball player who became the great evangelist of his day. He would hold meetings near Winona, which attracted thousands and tens of thousands of people. At times, my hosts would stop the boat, and we would drift awhile, pushed by the blowing breeze and, at times, causing the lake to get quite choppy regarding the waves. We talked and had a little picnic while the sun was shining. Only after a couple of hours or so did I feel my knees and legs start to burn. I know I should have figured it out at my age, but I didn’t put on sunscreen. The breeze had fooled me into thinking that the sun was not that much of a problem. By then, of course, it was too late. I had already had the effects of sunburn on my legs, and later that evening, the following day, I would feel its effects!
This experience served as a poignant reminder of our spiritual journey. It is a journey where, despite our experience, we can be misled and find ourselves in distress. The Psalmist's words in Psalm 16 resonate deeply: “Protect me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.” (v1-2). We are reminded that God is our ultimate protector, offering us a life of abundance and fullness. The psalmist concludes Psalm 16 with a powerful affirmation:
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
In the night, my heart also instructs me.
8 I keep the Lord always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;
my body also rests secure.
10 For you do not give me up to Sheol,
or let your faithful one see the Pit.
11 You show me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy;
in your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
It is crucial to remain rooted in God’s love and understanding of His word. Seeking the company of those who can guide us, spending time in conversation with God, and discerning His call on our lives are all vital aspects of our journey. However, we must be vigilant, as we can sometimes be misled by our circumstances, believing we are safe when we are actually in danger. As we move into the coming week, let us all refocus our lives to remain under God's protective embrace.
Shalom to you, my friend.
